Micheline de Bellefroid

Catalogue of the exhibition held at the Museum of Mariemony, Belgium

Micheline de Bellefroid is one of the foremost bookbinders in Belgium, with a reputation reaching far beyond her native country.  She is a towering and inspiring figure for any bookbinder, but for me she holds an even more special place.  She was the teacher of my teacher, Jacqueline Liekens, without whom I would never have discovered my passion.

The sleeve peeping out of the slipcase.
The sleeve with its vibrant band of turquoise sea snake. The inside of the slipcase is covered in fabric dyed the same colour.
Sleeve on the left. volume in the middle, slipcase on the right.
Another view of the three elements together, this time showing the soft suede interior of the sleeve - it makes for a very soft wrapping for the book!
A close-up of the cover decoration, which is an overlay of sea snake and black dots of goatskin. I deliberately worked the sea snake to leave that uneven edge.
A view of the inside leaf which is a reproduction of a paper used by Micheline de Bellefroid.
A view of the book with the end leaves and back cover showing.
A lovely headband.
I love this photo of the sleeve and the volume together. That turquoise really "pops" against the rich red.
Title page.
Some photos of the great artist's bindings.
Fantastic black and white décor, with just a hint of colour in the cream.
Some more brilliant de Bellefroid creations.
The front cover of the catalogue. You can see where I got the inspiration for the colours I used.
Another lovely photo of the three elements together.
