The Cycle and Other Poems

by Ninette de Valois

When I was a child, all I wanted was to be a ballerina.  I went to a school whose patron was Margot Fonteyn, and who trained dancers for La Scala in Milan.  I was quite good, and I was convinced that this would be my career, until I shot up to almost 6 feet, an impossible height for a ballerina in an Italian corps de ballet.  But ballet has always remained close to my heart, and when I saw this book in an specialist book seller in Melbourne, I just had to have it.  Ninette de Valois, the founder of the Royal ballet and Godmother of English ballet, I just had to have it.  This woman was in large part responsible for the career of Margot Fonteyn, my heroine.

The volume by itself. Green and turquoise snake skin on off-white calfskin.
The slipcase on the left, showing the same "torn" effect as on the cover. The volume is standing inside its slipcase, showing front and back covers with continuous design.
The book standing by itself inside its sleeve.
The slipcase, the volume and the sleeve which is fully covered in green snakeskin.
The sleeve beside the volume with its front cover opened, showing the inside leather finish.

The volume standing between its slipcase and sleeve, showing both inside covers and endsheets, all in seasnake.
The original cover of the volume, which inspired the colours I used.
The title page with Ninette de Valois' signature!
A close-up of the front cover, showing the beautiful gilding executed by Patrick Prouteau - but designed by me! This is one of my favourite designs ever.
